The Power of Positive Affirmations

When I first learned about positive affirmations, I thought it was a silly concept. And I questioned its' validity. About a year ago, I decided to give it a try. It was during a time that I was feeling down on myself and desperately needed a confidence boost. I researched positive affirmations online and read a bunch of examples. Then I came up with one of my own: "I am fierce. I am brave. I am strong". I've probably spoken these words a billion times by now. Today, I know that I am fierce, brave, and strong. And most days, I feel indestructable.

Affirmations are proven methods of self-improvement because of their ability to rewire the way we think. It's a practice of mind over matter. You are what you think. With affirmations, we translate our thoughts into words, and eventually into actions.

I learned that there are a few rules to follow when using positive affirmations. Always use positive words. Never use words like, "won't", "don't" or "can't". Your affirmations should also be spoken in present-tense, even if it isn't true (yet). Your brain only responds to present-tense statements. Lastly, positive affirmations are spoken as true or factual statements. "Today might be a great day" is not as powerful as saying "today is a great day".

It can feel unnatural to repeat something that is completely untrue or that you don't believe can happen. For example, I wouldn't say "I am rich" because I'm very far from it at the moment. Instead I could say, "I am worthy of an increase in income" or "I have the knowledge and power to be rich". That is more probable.

I have a list of positive affirmations that I have written in my journal. These affirmations are useful for a confidence boost in your everyday life. Use these or make revisions to make them specific to your life. Or create your own.

I am enough.

I am fierce. I am brave. I am strong.

I possess the necessary tools to be successful in life.

I am beautiful inside and out.

My heart is filled with love and joy.

I can conquer any obstacle that comes my way.

My mind and body are healthy and strong.

I have the determination and discipline to achieve my goals.

I am so confident that I do not care what others think about me.

My life is abundant. I have everything I want and need.
